Pre Election Engagements

Ensuring proper contact with political parties and their candidates especially Governorship candidates in Benue State to sensitize them about election debate and invite them to attend.

Contact with media chief Executive officers to sensitize and solicit for cooperation with live coverage of debates, contact with Resident Electoral Commissioner of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to obtain election time table and authentic list of candidates gubernatorial especially candidates.

GOVERNORSHIP DEBATES: 2015 AND 2019 ELECTIONS

This activity was in partnership with  by Centre for International Enterprise (CIPE) and Nigerian Elections Debate Group (NEDG) in 2015. The main objective was to enable  Benue voters to obtain first hand information on the policy trust of the Governorship candidates or political party. It was also an avenue for for Governorship candidates to present their manifestos and encourage voters to shun political violence.

In addition to organizing a media conference to senitize the media practitioners, BENCOBPA held advocacy visits to key media houses in Benue state and its environs such as Voice of Nigeria and Radio Benue. Other major stakeholders were engaged to ensure successful events including The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC. 

The Coalition further developed a position paper and drew up questions for the Governorship candidates to provide answers during the debate.

In 2015, five political parties participated in the debate including two leading national parties such as All progressives Congress (APC) and All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). Similarly, in 2019, four political parties participated in the debate.

The current Governor of Benue State Dr. Samuel Ortom was one of the candidates in the 2015 gubernatorial debate.

SENSITIZATION VISITS

Since inception, BENCOBPA at different times have engaged with various ministries, departments and agencies for advocacy purposes. These engagements have established a professional relationship with the government agencies, which include Ministry of Finance, Commissioner for Lands, Survey and Solid Minerals, Speaker, Benue House of Assembly, Benue State Board of Internal Revenue, Commissioner for Industries and Cooperatives and other important agencies. BENCOBPA have strengthened its relationship with the government through policy dialogues and sensitization visits to implement recommendations for socio-economic development in Benue state.
